Christmas Vacations on the Costa del Sol

Spend Christmas on the Costa del Sol

Escape the cold and grey of a northern European winter, the Costa del Sol is clearly the perfect destination for a Winter-Sun Holiday!

Christmas in Málaga Centre - "A must see for visitors"

Calle Larios, the main pedestrian shopping street in the centre of Malaga is a sight to behold from mid December onwards. The local authorities decorate this marble paved street and those around it with around two and half million lights in a fantastic display. Crowds are drawn to the city in the evenings to see this wonderful sight and experience the wonderful Christmas atmosphere. There are different coloured decorations mounted in overhead displays which are repeated every few metres along the street so it is fantastic spectacle of coloured lights. There is also a cone of poinsettias constructed in one the plazas, like a giant Christmas tree as it is 30 feet high! The framework of this is made of metal and the flower pots are slotted into the frame making an absolutely stunning sight.

The Christmas flowers, poinsettias, are everywhere along these streets either planted in pots or hanging from the lamp posts giving a very festive feeling daytime or evenings. Even the palm trees are bathed in wonderful lights at this time of year. The main road in the centre, the Alameda Principal, has its large, tall trees illuminated on the trunks and main branches which look both beautiful and dramatic at night. All of the local shops are decorated for Christmas as well as the local park being decked with a myriad of coloured lights and all of the fountains being surrounded by even more poinsettias. All in all, Malaga is a fantastic city at Christmas time with a unique magical ambience of colour and lights along with wonderful Spanish hospitality. When you have experienced this once, you will want to return again and again!

If you want to indulge yourself in a traditional Christmas but away from it all in the sun, then you will find all you need in the local supermarkets and hypermarkets along the Costa del Sol. You can buy everything for a 'typical' British Christmas lunch with all the trimmings including delicious mince pies and cook it yourself in wonderful surroundings. You just need to head to Iceland in Puerto Banús or Fuengirola, or Marks and Spencer in the Shopping Centre La Cañada, Marbella. If you have time, you always have the option to visit Gibraltar for a day, to collect your festive fare from Morrison's even down to those Christmas puddings and that box of Quality Street!

As for those of you who like to spend Christmas lunch or dinner without any of the hard work, the choice is yours for the taking. There are numerous restaurants serving traditional British Christmas lunch to choose from. Whether you want a great value set menu version or if prefer an upmarket exclusive dining choice, it's all available!

Restaurant La Sala in Puerto Banús will create an ultimate social and dining experience for those looking for a memorable night with contemporary and chic surroundings. Here, they can provide your festive night with gourmet cuisine and an infectious ambiance. They offer a Christmas Lunch or Dinner menu in the main restaurant as well as the option of choosing something a little more private as their function room is available for hire.

Moochers Jazz Café, situated in the heart of Fuengirola's restaurant area, is a lively restaurant with live music 7 nights a week, and occupies what used to be an old fisherman's cottage. Established in 1993 Moochers has become one of the 'must' places to visit and offers a keenly priced Christmas Party Menu, Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas Day Lunch, and of course a New Year's Eve Gala Dinner with Carol Singing to try and entice you into celebrating.

Alternatively, for those of you who came to Spain to forget about traditions and preconceptions and do not want Christmas festive fare then a celebration on the beach is an experience that you might enjoy. Perhaps you want to opt for Grilled 'Cigalas' (Crayfish) and Paella instead? Why not enjoy a few glasses of Sangria or Cava and watch the sun setting? If that is the case then the Costa del Sol is where your alternative Christmas day awaits you!

The beauty of Christmas on the Costa del Sol is that you can also choose to enjoy a wintery, snow expedition to the Sierra Nevada and Granada. It will only take you around 90 minutes drive from Marbella to find this upbeat skiing resort. Sierra Nevada offers the best selection of options; skiing, snowboarding or just enjoying the stunning landscape and the sun for the day.
